fun in the unexpected

Pat, pat, pat. Scoop, scoop, scoop. Children love to get their hands into stuff. A favorite concotion at the preschool is what we call cloud dough. Cloud dough is flour and oil, that's it. Just enough oil added to flour to create a new texture that will sustain many a young child at play. This week, in the toddler room, we tried a variation of cloud dough, a one ingredient powdery bit of fun. Can you guess what it is?

Cake mix! Good old fashioned boxed cake mix. Box mixes have a just enough oil already added so all you have to do is open and pour. We were a bit bummed to find that the vanilla mix we used lacked that quintessential cake mix scent but it still added many minutes of fun for the toddlers. A dash of glitter helps as well. If you want to try this at home, use a large cookie sheet on top of a towel, add some spoons and measuring cups, a couple of small animal toys and let your child explore away.
