We're rockin' and rollin' in May

We've been studying rocks lately and the culmination of our study was that each student got to create a painted rock.  The idea for this study started in April when we took a field trip across the street to the community garden.  Some garden areas had large painted rocks for decoration and the students expressed such delight with the rocks that I asked if they might like to make one of their own.

Rather than simply presenting the activity, I saw this interest as a vehicle for learning.  From our observations and from non-fiction books we learned that rocks are made of minerals.  We learned that rocks form in a variety of ways but the most exciting way to a PreK student is through volcanoes.  So we added a science experiment by creating volcanic eruptions (reaction) with baking soda and vinegar.

And last of all, a few odds and ends from the week.
