Although this was a short week of school, we were busy inside the classroom and out. We practiced fine motor skills like lacing, cutting fringe, and pulling rubber bands.
Our new letter of the week is U and it's a little hard coming up with an animal for U…but the Zoophonics program decided upon a bird from the rainforest called the umbrella bird. We learned about the life of an umbrella bird (where they live, what they eat, and what they look like.) Then we made our own feather crests attached to a band (decorated in the letter U.
We played alphabet Bingo to reinforce our recognition of letters and we practiced identifying sounds.
The sensory experience this week was a mixture of corn starch and hair conditioner. Depending on how much conditioner is added you will get a consistency very dry and crumbly or very sticky like dough. The students have really enjoyed this unique experience but not everyone is a fan of the scent from the conditioner!
Science exploration and spelling/letter recognition were paired up in our light table area. I put out an assortment of colored plastic alphabet pieces and the class immediately used it as an opportunity to spell each other's names, group letters by color, and make up some very interesting new words.
